YOUNG INVESTIGATORS’ AWARD - ICE 2010

1. The award of $500 is bestowed by the President of the International Council on Electrocardiology
– Adriaan van Oosterom – during the closing ceremony of the 36th International Congress of Electrocardiology.
A second prize of $300 and a third prize of $200 are also awarded.
2. The Young Investigators’ Award should be managed by the Member of the Council designated as the Young Investigators’ Award Convener – Professor M. Hiraoka. This individual should liaise closely with the local President of the Congress in the organization of the competition.
3. A jury of at least four members of the International Council Electrocardiology should be chosen each year to select the winner. They would normally be the Convener of the Young Investigators’ Award Competition and the President of the Congress, together with the President and President-Elect of the Council although if specific expertise is required to judge one or more presentations, a member or members of the council with the required knowledge should be co-opted. None of the jury should have a connection with the work being presented; if so, another member of the Council should take his/her place. In the first instance, this would be another Past-President. The Organizer of the Congress should make arrangements for six candidates (selected as described under 6 below) to present their work in a plenary session devoted to "The Young Investigators’ Award".
4. Each presentation should consist of a ten minute talk concerning a scientific investigation in the field of electrocardiology, which should have been carried out in the main by the candidate. A single author abstract is preferred, but if multiple names are included, the Head of the candidate's Department should provide a supporting statement outlining the work of the candidate. The presentation should be followed by five minutes of discussion at which the jury and the audience should be free to ask questions.
5. Each young scientist, who should be under 35 years of age at the date of the Congress, is entitled to apply for the Award by submitting one and only one abstract of his/her work to the Organizing Committee of the Congress. Previous finalists who have won a first, second or third prize are not eligible to compete again. A young investigator in training is not supposed to have his/her own research funds as a general rule, and should not be leading a research team, i.e. an entrant should not be an established investigator.
6. Abstract submission

It is assumed that the abstract will be available in electronic form.
The abstract should be submitted through the abstract submission of ICE 2010.

6.2 The abstract should be accompanied by the following declaration:
"The (first named) author requests that this abstract be considered for "The Young Investigators’ Award". The (first named) author certifies that the results are based on original research in which he/she has made a primary contribution. Furthermore, this author certifies to being less than thirty five years of age at the date of the Congress".

The above declaration should be sent by e-mail to the conference agency, email; lotta@malmokongressbyra.se. Mark the document with the abstract number. At the discretion of the organizer, a top signed copy may be requested.
7. From all applications submitted for "The Young Investigators’ Award", six candidates should be selected. This procedure should be carried out by at least five members of the International Council on Electrocardiology, including the Jury as outlined in clause 3. The Organizer of the Congress will be responsible for selecting the members of the panel who will be asked to review all the abstracts submitted for the Award. None of the reviewers should be linked to any of the work in the abstracts under consideration. The reviewers should mark each abstract on a scale of 1 - 10 where 10 is the highest mark. Ideally each reviewer will use a spread of marks in the form of ranking so that there is a range from 1 - 10 even if all abstracts are of high quality. The Chairman of the Young Investigator's Competition should receive all reviews and then, in an automatic fashion, choose those six which have the highest number of marks overall. At no time should selection of abstracts be based on geographic considerations - only scientific merit should be considered.
8. The Young Investigator Award session at the Annual Congress should be chaired by the Competition Chairman and the President of the Council. They must ensure that time guidelines are met and in the event that questions pose difficulties of understanding due to language barriers, they can allow sympathetic assistance within the time guidelines.
