Chemometrics' Epistemology in Systems Biology
Using the 'omics technologies to study complex biological systems
May 9-11 2011, Falsterbo-Skanör, Öresund, Sweden
Systems biology has matured as a research field and includes advanced modeling of biological systems. It is partly driven by the generation of high-throughput or so called 'omics data (e.g. proteomics and metabolomics). However, it has become more and more recognized that there is a gap between data generation and biochemical interpretation. How to generate informative data and to develop data analytical tools to convert data into biochemical information?
Chemometrics is the science of extracting information from complex systems by data-driven means. The key to success in chemometrics multivariate modeling is hence high quality data management. A collection of data does not mean information. Identifying features and patterns in the data leads to information, and only then has the potential to represent knowledge. It only becomes knowledge, however, when one is able to realize and understand the patterns and their implications.
The focus of our conference, Chemometrics' Epistemology in Systems biology will be on the scientific process, from data generation to the quality of gained knowledge and its presentation to a scientific audience. Our target audience has a focus on using the 'omics technologies to study complex biological systems. Clinicians, biologists, mathematicians, statisticians, physicists and chemists in academia and industry that want to understand how to create information from data to gain new biological knowledge are most welcome to this meeting. The number of participants is limited to 70, which will give a nice atmosphere for discussions.
Among the accepted abstracts, we will select participants for oral and poster presentations.
The meeting is organized by the Chemometrics division within the Swedish Chemical Society.
We invite you to beautiful Falsterbo-Skanör at the bright spring season and hope that you will have a scientifically rewarding and enjoyable stay.
